When it comes to shopping around for insurance, most of us scour the internet for home insurance quotes, loss of luggage cover or the cheapest protection for your car available. But have you ever been so worried about being abducted by aliens that you actually got an insurance quote for when the little green men come?

This, however, isn't the weirdest out of the bunch of odd insurance policies put together for your enjoyment!

1.     Moustache Insurance

We’ve all heard of celebrities insuring their body parts, the most famous being Betty Grable’s legs in the 1940s, but most haven’t gone as far as protecting their facial hair. Except, of course, for Australia’s Merv Hughes. Although Merv was a powerful bowler for the Aussie national cricket team, he was more worried about his walrus-like moustache being damaged than his bowling arm and insured his whiskers for a whopping $317,000 (Australian).

2.     Rapture Insurance

Are you afraid your friends and family are not holy enough to ascend to heaven when the Rapture occurs? Look no further than youvebeenleftbehind.com. This site offers Christians a chance to save the souls of their loved ones up to six days after the day of the Rapture. In the event of the faithful being called up to heaven, those left on earth can be sent a personalised message in the hope they will accept Christ and be saved. Save some souls for just $14.95 a year.

3.     Alien Abduction Insurance

The thought of loss of memory, property or sanity due to alien abduction is just too much for some people, and luckily for them, there are plenty of insurance companies out there who will insure them for such a thing. More than 20,000 alien abduction policies have been sold since the early 90s and the number of people who live in fear of being taken aboard a spaceship is growing. If extra terrestrial events can be proved, you can get a payout for just £5 a year.

4.     Immaculate Conception Insurance

In 2000, three sisters in Scotland took out an insurance policy to cover themselves for the event of Immaculate Conception. Should one of the sisters have to bring up the second coming of Christ, the insurance company involved would shell out £1,000,000 to cover the costs. After six years, the policy was cancelled due to constant complaints from members of the Catholic Church.

5.     Taco Insurance

In 2001, Taco Bell ran a promotional stunt that captured the imagination (or taste buds) of the United States. The American food chain placed a 40? x 40? target in the Pacific Ocean, where the Mir Space Station was due to splashdown in the near future. Taco Bell promised the country that if the station hit the target on landing, everyone in America would receive a free taco. In the unlikely event that the station did hit the target, the chain took out an insurance policy to cover the loss of $272.8 million – the total cost of one taco for every single person in the USA.
